On Top of the World

Image
Today Shelly, along with 50 other women ranging in ages from 25-80, hiked to the top of the famous peaks that are always in our sunset photos. It took Shelly and her group 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the top. The top was the hardest as it was nearly vertical, rocky, and narrow. It was a very good thing that they wore leather gloves. As soon as you crested the top this was the view of the Sea of Cortez looking toward Baja. The views were amazing and you really felt on top of the world. Here is San Carlos. Here is the San Carlos Marina. Here is our fearless leader Pat. This was her 14th hike up the mountain and she is 80 years old. The rest of us can only hope.... It took 1 hour to hike down. We'll see how sore Shelly is tomorrow......

All for Charity

A 1/2 marathon, 10k, and 5k race was held this last Sunday to benefit Castaway Kids here in San Carlos and Arizona. We registered for the 5k but PJ quickly took over 'communications' during the race and was not able to participate in the actual walk. As it was a kick off for Carnival which begins on the 19th, Shelly and a few of her friends dressed in costume. Several Mexicans wanted their photo taken with these girls and they were quite the attraction. Even in costume they walked 15 minute miles and Shelly came in 148th. There was also a cheerleading squad there who put on quite a show - the Pinwinos.

Always Active

Shelly's mom and step dad just left after spending 6 weeks here (they increased their visit by 2 weeks as they loved it so much). We took another horseback ride and this time included the boys. Shelly has had Temblor twice now and just loves this horse. We hiked Canon de Nacapule. PJ climbed the waterfall to reach the oasis and old Indian camps above. We bought shrimp from the street vendors outside of Guasimas. We drove around the bay in Guaymas. Here are mango tree blooms.

Cabalgata

This is a real cowboy horseride from one ranch to another. It is all about pageantry and is not a race. The cowboys arrive with their horses the evening before the ride and camp out. A BBQ was hosted by the ranch. PJ presented his 4 litre bottle of tequila for sharing by the cowboys and he immediately made a lot of new friends. Shelly warms her hands on the BBQ and is offered gloves from a Mexican man. She gives the gloves back at the end of the night and he says they are a gift for her so she remembers him as her friend, very nice. The ride the next day consisted of about 125 horses and they rode about 25 miles.
