Colorado June 2 - 13

We arrive at Shelly's moms cabin outside of Granby, Colorado mid-afternoon. As we head up the dirt road to the cabin, a deer jumps across the road right in front of us. As Hunter has been in the car for two days now, we decide to have him run 2 miles to the cabin to wear him out. Hunter takes off behind us after the deer. He doesn't go far but in running back toward us he crosses a cattle guard in the road and falls into it. He is limping but nothing luckily appears to be broken. As always the cabin and surrounding area is spectacular. At this altitude (approx. 8,500') we feel the affects of alcohol more and PJ is in bed and snoring by 6 pm.
We ride the ATV to the top of a nearby mountain where there is still 4' of snow and we get hailed on. We hustle back down as the hail stings when it hits us. We ride the ATV on another day and see a moose. We discover that AT&T does not have cell service in this area and feel a little out of touch due to no phone or email contact.
We are sleeping long and hard and finally feel like we are catching up on our lost sleep over the past month.
Hunter is running all over the place and having a great time. He doesn't know to look out for trees though and when we throw his ball for fetching, he blasts after it and has run into a tree in his path. He lets out a loud cry and is a little bruised but he is fine and ready to play more.
Shelly's brother and nephews also arrive at the cabin. We awake one morning to fresh snow falling and accumulation on the ground. We drive to Rocky Mountain National Park and sneak up on some elk in a meadow. We drive to the very top summit, Never Summer Range, where there is a lot of snow still on the ground and it is very windy and cold. We find out that Granby does not have any pay phones in town but we do find internet service at the local library.
We ride the ATVs as far as we can (as we are blocked by snow) up Elk Mountain (11,400') and then hike through 4' snow drifts as far as we can.
We have to stop as the drifts are so icy that should we slip, we will slide down 80' before we hit bottom. The weather is on the cool side and we have not worn a pair of shorts or short sleeve shirts since we got here.
