Our Lives

Image
In the trailer everything has its place and it is best to put it back where it belongs once you have used it. It takes less than 30 minutes to clean the inside of the trailer....nice. We are prepared for rain at any time. We are stocking up on sunscreen and bug spray. We are not letting the heat stop us from doing things (but man is it brutal at times). We are finding out the best food and drink deals in town and meeting people while we are at it. We have surveyed 8 bars so far for the best margaritas; results forthcoming soon. Mexican cell phone calls are expensive; .40 cents per minute and the one who initiates the call pays for the call. We have spoken to friend and family via the computer and this works fantastic and is free, will be trying the webcam soon. We have all the time in the world to do something, anything, or nothing. Shelly has learned to cook with what is available in the stores; it is mostly Mexican themed but she has come up with some interesting variations. Checking

All Things Mexican

Mexicans drive fast but move slow at everything else. An errand run that you think will only take an hour takes several hours. Cottage cheese is very large curd and very good. Only one variety of cheese packaged a few different ways. Tortillas with every meal. Margarine spread is very yellow and waxy. No non-flavored yogurt ('natural' yogurt is actually sweetened yogurt). No Mexican brand cranberry juice. Wine selection is limited but ok so far. Only one kind of lettuce - iceberg. Gotta love pozole. Dog food is sold in bulk. The 'check engine' light came on in the Jeep. We had the code read at the Auto Zone store in Guaymas and the reading was 'gasolina'. The guy at Auto Zone reset the Jeep's system and turned off the light for us. Gotta love lizards, toads, bugs, etc. This guy (below) was about 6" across his back and is a Colorado River Toad. Extremely poisonous, if Hunter even licks him once he would most likely die.

The Wrath of Julio

We've had over 5" of rain in 12 hours overnight and the rain continues.... Streets flood when it rains. Rocks become driving hazards. Sink holes are created that could swallow a car whole and who knows how long it will take to fill these in. Bus drivers are still going and cut you off. And, of course, we are out and about (this is our street). During the rain yesterday there was a huge dragonfly hatch. Now remember, these are Mexican dragonflies so they were gigantic and flying all around us, geesh.

Tropical Storm Julio

Image
We are hunkered down and waiting it out while Tropical Storm Julio passes by. Clouds came in yesterday with the rain starting early this morning. No strong winds yet, just rain. Julio is centered over the Sea of Cortez and we are located at the notch on the mainland just above the center of the storm. Areas of Baja have received 3" of rain in 6 hours. Our rain should end sometime late on Wednesday. The air temperature is 78 degrees and boy is this a nice reprieve.
